Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with player absences following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been absent since August due to knee surgery. Originally slated to be available sooner, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when advancing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is much more reliable and has more options,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return from a muscle injury off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Further fitness issues surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to deal with such absences.

Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if increased squad depth was helping their championship push, his response was positive. “Absolutely, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the defence,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we must deploy players in various roles, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we want to compete at this level. And the case of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Star

Speaking about the setback noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the required step and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

He shared his personal desire to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his personality. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to see him return with the squad and playing because I think it’s going to be a massive boost.”
