At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
