Britain Prepared to Employ Immobilized Russian Funds to Support the Ukrainian War Effort
The UK is ready to advance with utilizing the entire amount of frozen Russia's assets to aid Ukraine's war effort, PM Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a shared declaration, the heads of state of the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany stated that this joint measure would increase strain on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and persuade the Russian Federation to engage in negotiations.
They further noted that the decision would be implemented in strong partnership with the United States.
United Kingdom penalties have blocked over £25bn of Russian assets since Russia launched its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. However, until now, money sent to the Ukrainian government using Russian assets had only been drawn from profits and interest earned on them.
Sir Keir informed President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and Germany were united in their aim to push forward toward using the complete amount of the seized Moscow's national holdings to end the war.
He added that further measures in the coming days and weeks would heighten the tension on the Russian government.
This announcement comes after European officials gathered in Copenhagen previously to debate employing seized Russian funds for a 140-billion-euro loan to the Ukrainian nation.
Recently, President Donald Trump called on G7 allies to seize or utilize immobilized Russia's assets, based on media sources.
The value of immobilized Russia's funds in the EU is assessed to be approximately €211bn.

Moscow carried out widespread bombardments all over the Ukrainian territory on that day, causing power cuts in many areas of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and several other zones.

In a update on X following the attack, Zelensky wrote that the premeditated assault targeted non-military and power facilities.
"What's needed is not empty words but concrete steps - from the America, EU, and the G7 - in supplying air defence systems and implementing restrictions," he stated.
"Each restrictive measure weakens Russia's war machine," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.
In the same period, Zelensky informed media outlets he would urge Sir Keir to participate in the PURL scheme, under which partner nations acquire military equipment from the America to provide to Ukraine.
While praising the Britain's firm backing for Ukraine, he remarked it should demonstrate clearly that it would take part in the program, as well as apply more sanctions on Moscow.
