Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
