Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
