Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
