Weather experts are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Expected to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this meant the weather was likely to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
