The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
