The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
