The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
