In a significant military action, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military command.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts observed at the site. This represents another instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles against objectives inside Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility acts as one of the main suppliers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held productive discussions with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“We had a very productive conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some new ideas on how to bring real peace closer, and it involves formats, potential summits, and, of course, the schedule.”
Judicial Proceedings Within Russia
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in defiance.
International Detainee Situation
Russian authorities indicated it is engaged with French officials regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of spying.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and advocate for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Controversial Reopening in Mariupol
A theatre in Mariupol, which was destroyed in a 2022 Russian airstrike while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to open its doors again. Authorities in control have heralded the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Moscow effort to showcase its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is expected to open by the month's end with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the past two years.
