Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile New Leader.

Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Agenda Built On Security and Immigration

Known for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily centered on promises to address rising insecurity and radically curb immigration.

He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.

His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the army presence on the northern border.

Part of a Broader Wave

Numerous commentators view Kast's success as fitting into a broader conservative shift in the region, coming after this year's political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further view it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Solid Majority

Despite his sweeping electoral victory, Kast does not command an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are combined together.

This political landscape might hinder his plans, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided specifics.

"We have numerous things about how a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," noted a political analyst.

The expert stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But where there is much less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
