Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
