Zohran Mamdani states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately after his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
